History of Review History
Manhattan Review began at Columbia Business School in 1999 when Joern Meissner, then a doctoral student at the university, earned a reputation for deconstructing complex and advanced subjects in an accessible manner while giving lectures to MBA students. Some of these students thought that Meissner's teaching style would translate well to delivering exam preparation for graduate school admissions tests such as the LSAT. They challenged him to devise a method of prep that was better than their own lackluster and unproductive experiences. Meissner responded by devising original lectures that spanned LSAT, GRE, and GMAT material from a different yet concise and streamlined perspective. Students recognized that his perspective was far superior to the routine memorization and dull tricks offered by other prep companies at the time.
Since then, Manhattan Review has developed into a highly respected global educational services company, with branches not just in Cape Town, but all across South Africa and in major European, North American, Asian, and Australian cities. Our offerings have grown to include prep classes and private tutoring for the LSAT, GRE, GMAT, SAT, SSAT, ACT, ISEE, TOEFL, and IELTS, as well as admissions consulting and application services. We provide our students in-depth knowledge of higher education and standardized testing while providing a holistic context to Johannesburg and South Africa, in addition to the other cities in which we serve.
About our Founder
Joern Meissner is an internationally respected business school professor with a Diploma in Business Management from the University of Hamburg as well as a PhD in Management Science from Columbia Business School in New York City, one of the top Ivy League Schools. Upon finishing of his doctoral degree, Meissner decided upon the career track of a scholar and has now more than 25 years of experience as a postsecondary educator. His passion for teaching is evident, as he has taught business courses at the University of Hamburg, the Leipzig Graduate School of Management, Lancaster University Management School, as well as the University of Mannheim. Meissner's research on dynamic pricing, supply chain management, and revenue management has been published in several well-known and respected academic journals. While Professor Meissner comprehensively enjoys his research, he believes that grasping an idea is only half of the fun; imparting important knowledge to others is even more rewarding. This philosophy was paramount to the establishment of Manhattan Review, and continues to remain its most treasured principle today.
