It is not always easy to determine the GRE scores that are most helpful to a given student's admissions prospects. Some schools simplify things by providing minimum score requirements for various programs. The Illinois Institute of Technology, for example, lists the requisite GRE scores for many of its graduate degrees. Applicants for a master's degree in applied mathematics must score at least 304 combined verbal and quantitative and 2.5 analytical writing. While IIT computer and electrical engineering master's degree students must produce the same 304 composite verbal/quantitative score, this department requires at least a 159 quantitative along with a 3.5 analytical writing. Among institutions that have no required minimums, average GRE scores for accepted students should be considered, and these can fluctuate from year to year. Students accepted in 2015 to Stanford University's Master of Science in Management Science and Engineering program produced average GRE scores of 161 verbal, 166 quantitative, and 4.5 analytical writing. In 2016, the average verbal and quantitative scores for this program dropped to 159 verbal and 163 quantitative (although analytical writing remained stable at 4.5).
Manhattan Review's GRE prep courses and private tutoring guide our students to the GRE scores that are optimal for their specific situations. Our students have been accepted to graduate programs in all GRE-relevant disciplines, at elite schools such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, the London School of Economics, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Melbourne. After completing their graduate degrees, our students have been hired by world-class organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, Johannesburg firms, and institutions for research and education. Meet a Johannesburg GRE Tutor: Leslie P.
Leslie P., a native of Freehold, New Jersey, has been a GRE tutor since 2011. She holds a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Virginia and a master of arts in teaching from the University of Kansas. Her teaching experience includes four years as a junior high school science teacher and two years as a special education teacher.
Leslie moved to Johannesburg in 2015, where she currently works for a local textbook publisher in addition to teaching GRE prep for approximately 20 hours per week. Her students often comment on her careful and caring approach to GRE teaching. "Leslie's GRE instruction is detail-oriented, but her sympathetic attitude makes learning this complicated material much easier," said one student. "I commend her without reservation."
