History of Manhattan Review
In 1999 Joern Meissner, who was then a doctoral student and lecturer at Columbia Business School, set the early foundations for Manhattan Review in New York City. Professor Meissner's lectures to MBA students at Columbia were characterized by a special capability of simplifying and streamlining complex, convoluted concepts to their bare essence. A handful of these students expressed that Meissner's teaching style would translate well to preparation for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), and they urged him to create a method of GMAT prep that was finer than their previous unproductive and disappointing experiences. Meissner responded by devising original GMAT lectures that spanned GMAT material using a simplified, efficient, and streamlined approach in language that was easy to comprehend. Students quickly concurred that this method was far better than the old style of memorization and "tricks" offered by competing test prep companies at the time.
In the years since, Manhattan Review has evolved into an international educational services firm, with locations not only in South Africa, but also major North American, European, Asian, and Australian cities. Our offerings have developed to include prep courses and private tutoring for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, SAT, SSAT, ACT, ISEE, TOEFL, and IELTS, as well as admissions consulting and application advisory services. Test prep for global applicants to universities in the English-speaking world has become one of our areas of expertise, as a meaningful percentage of our student population lives outside countries where English is the native language. We provide our test prep clients a truly top-notch understanding of higher education, in addition to thorough familiarity with the educational communities and specialized student needs in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Pretoria, as well as every metropolitan area we serve.
About our Founder
Joern Meissner is a globally celebrated business school professor and holds a Diploma in Business Management from the University of Hamburg as well as a PhD in Management Science from Columbia Business School in New York City, one of the premier Ivy League Schools. Upon finishing his doctoral degree, Meissner decided upon the career track of an academic and has now over 25 years of experience as a postsecondary instructor. His zealous passion for teaching is apparent, and he has taught business classes at the University of Hamburg, the Leipzig Graduate School of Management, Lancaster University Management School, and the University of Mannheim. Meissner's research on dynamic pricing, supply chain management, and revenue management has been published in several well-known and venerated academic journals. While Professor Meissner comprehensively enjoys his research, he believes that understanding an idea is only half of the fun; conveying knowledge to others is even more rewarding. This philosophy was crucial to the establishment of Manhattan Review, and continues to remain its most cherished principle today.
